Study demonstrates the regenerative effect of fat stem cells on the facial skin
Vienna (2017-10-03) — Giving back skin youthful freshness and elasticity has been an aim of aesthetic medicine for a long time. Artificial fillers, Botox, and surgical facelifts merely conceal the symptoms of lost skin quality. One important factor that is responsible for the formation of wrinkles and dry, leathery skin is the sun. Although sunlight supplies the body with the vitally important vitamin D, on the other hand its UV radiation causes the so-called photo-aging. Affected is primarily the skin in the body regions that are exposed to the sun.
In an Iranian study, 16 patients (15 women and one male) underwent wrinkle treatment with Stromal Vascular Fraction (SVF) in the area of the nasolabial folds (wrinkles between the nose and the mouth) and the marionette lines (wrinkles from the corners of the mouth to the chin). SVF, obtained from the patient’s own fat, is rich in so-called Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) and can be successfully used for skin rejuvenation, as the study confirms. Six months after SVF injections there was a remarkable improvement in the skin structure: Elasticity and tissue density of the skin had increased significantly.
“If the properties of a young, healthy skin can be restored and the biological skin quality be improved by a treatment with the body’s own stem cells, this also becomes noticeable in the skin’s appearance,” says DDr. Karl-Georg Heinrich, physician from Vienna, who is active in the field of aesthetic and regenerative medicine. “The regenerative capabilities of the fat stem cells play a special role in this.” In his Clinic DDr. Heinrich® the body’s own fat and its components are also used for natural breast augmentation and regeneration of damaged tissues, such as joint problems.
In skin regeneration with stem cells from autologous body fat in the Clinic DDr. Heinrich®, first a small amount of the patient’s fat is harvested by means of liposuction with microcannulas. The vital SVF cells obtained therefrom are immediately injected into the affected skin areas on the face and body. Treatment is performed on an outpatient basis in local anesthesia. The stem cells stimulate the regeneration of the skin and thereby promote a younger and more vital appearance.
The regenerative power of the fat stem cells can also be used in other areas of regenerative and aesthetic medicine: Stem cells from body fat are also suitable for treating scars and can stimulate thinning hair to new growth.
